This is a Power Paradox that Every Leader Experiences….

For the last 50,000 years, we have utilized mainly Yang, or the masculine portion of power.

Throughout human history, the one thing that is consistent is war, or conflict.

It’s what defines our history as a species with meticulous records, brilliant strategies, and heroic stories of victory.

No other species on the planet has contributed more to the Art of War than human beings.

Thanks to a series of conflicts or wars, we have witnessed an increased standard of living, or peace, through technology, industry, and diplomacy.

We are lucky enough to experience economic depressions to booms without an interruption of services.

We are able to invent new products and services to make our lives more convenient.

With this increased convenience, we have more access to information than ever before.

It’s a power paradox that we have more than ever before, but we are the most unsatisfied generation despite what we have.

Worldwide as a cost of our progress and success, we have ignored the Yin side of the power paradigm.

It’s a place of mystery instead of mastery that can terrify most people.

Whereas the Yang side is associated with action, the Yin side of the power paradigm can be explained as intuition.

It’s as Sun Tzu explains in the Art of War, the Tao, or the Way.

It can’t be mastered by reading a textbook only. It’s nonlinear, uncontrollable, and unplannable.

In many people, it’s undeveloped and latent waiting to bloom.

So we have been playing with only one half of the power paradigm deck by concentrating only on the Yang or doing side.

To manifest that we truly desire in the outer world, we look towards the inner work of professional and personal development.

A New Power Paradigm Emerges

As many people talk about only the rise of the Yi way of leadership, they are negating the Yang accomplishments and applications. We hold that there is a new power paradigm emerging where both sides of Yin and Yang, whether in the external human form in fe/male or internally doing vs. being, are evolving.

You see it in the media where the concept of gender is challenged through the changing definition of bathroom access, marriage, and family. We are evolving as a species from the strict binary to multiple variations of gender definitions.

And so is our system of Power.

As Sun Tzu would say, “In battle, there are not more than two methods of attack: the direct and the indirect; yet these two in combination give rise to an endless series of maneuvers.”

Those who are stuck in the strict Yang expression will be left behind as the Yang power structure is dismantled to make way for the New Power Paradigm. Those who expound the glories of the Yin expression only will wonder what happened as the New Power Paradigm expands.

How Do We Tap Into the New Power Paradigm?

In developing our work for an Asian women’s leadership program in 10 metropolitan areas covered in Forbes Women, we researched, developed and tested assessments, practices, and exercises to cultivate Sun Tzu’s genius.

As Sun Tzu would say “I can see who will win and who will lose. The leader with the most ability has the knowledge of The Method and The Way. The leader with the most ability plus the leader with knowledge of Heaven and Earth will be victorious.”

In our 18 years of research, we investigated, read, and correlated cross-cultural definitions of leadership, skills (The Method), and qualities (The Way). Through Sun Tzu’s guidance, we boiled it down to 20 Secret Skills and 10 Essential Qualities for 3 stages of person’s career. We introduced our work throughout 10 cities in North America at Diversity Leadership Conferences, and even at the Korean Embassy.

Teaching in Paradox & The Myth of the 3 Doctors

In China, many stories are taught in the form of paradox, which is the interplay of opposites. By using paradox, this shakes up your predominant methods. In time you will become more fluid and adaptable like water as the ways to your victory become infinite.

There is a famous story about 3 Chinese doctors. It is often told as 3 brothers. In this adapted modernized version, we have changed it to the 3 sisters to start ground you in the idea of Yin Power paradigm. In fact many of our materials use She instead of He to appeal to your feminine Yin side.

For some people this may provoke an initial reaction, since you are used to everything being written in He. Go with this emotional state as it will be the energy to start shaking your core up!

In time, it won’t matter what gender pronoun we use. You’ll ascend to a level with skills and qualities above and beyond most people who are stuck in a s/he world and into the New Power Paradigm.

The Myth of the 3 Doctors

Centuries ago, there are 3 sisters who are very successful healers. They had learned techniques from their mother and were very skilled in the healing arts.

A Lady inquired about their abilities. She asked the youngest one about her family of healers.

As the youngest doctor, “I use the latest technology, surgeries, and medical procedures. My name is the most famous of the sisters – associated with medical science throughout China.”

“My middle sister uses herbs, potions, and medicines to cure diseases. Her name is the most famous in the country side.”

“My oldest sister can stop disease before it takes form and can stop it from leaving the door. Therefore, her name is the least known through the lands.”

This story of the 3 healers illuminates paradox. Whether it’s the healing arts or marital arts, where less is more. Whether it’s dis-ease or dis-harmony, the more information about the problem can help us discover what’s the solution.

Sun Tzu often teaches in paradox throughout the Art of War. Though Sun Tzu discusses strategy and conflict, its essence is to “win without fighting.”

Deciphering this classic book has remained an enigma, especially to our Western, or direct Yang mindset. Constructed of paradoxes, the Art of War is heavily based on the Yin, Tao or indirect philosophy.

Winners often have access to more resources, expand their territories or market footprints, and ensure more victories.
